Our New Home

Moving to a new home is always an exciting and stressful experience. We have never built a home before so building a spec home for our first go has actually been great. If you did not already know a "spec home" or "speculative home" is a new home that is built by a builder or developer without a specific buyer in mind. The builder or developer builds the home with the hope of selling it to a buyer, rather than building it to meet the specifications of a particular buyer. So far we are loving that we will be getting the benefits of moving into a new space without the headache and timeline of a custom build. We also have two high energy kids age three and under so we weren’t ready to be living in a construction zone with a home renovation. We selected a layout that will fit our family’s needs and lifestyle which is a huge win. Building in general can bring both anticipation and some uncertainties, but we are mostly excited to finally plant some roots here in Charlotte.

With our new neighborhood, the developer chose each lot’s layout and exterior color. Once we narrowed down the best layout for our family, we were able to see the lots that were pre-selected for this layout. We had two lots that were in the running because of their street in the neighborhood and so in the end it came down to exterior paint color. The downside to building a spec home is that they tend to lack some personality and buyers don’t usually have a say in the material selections. Due to COVID, the builder and developer decided to hold off on finishing out many of the lots which allowed new buyers to select from two styles of interior selections. So we actually did have a small say in the interior selections. We chose the option with white cabinets, light floors, and matte black hardware. Sure, there are a few elements that I would not have selected if we were doing a custom home, but luckily, we are excited for the challenge to make our new space truly feel like ours by slowly doing some DIY projects to update the spaces with intention.

One of the things we are most looking forward to is finally having a yard again, and being in a home that is a better fit for our lifestyle. We want this new home to be the place where our kids grow up and make many of their core memories. Personally, I am most excited to get into a new space where I can experiment with design. I am so excited that I already created a mood board which is full of transitional designs. Transitional design is a great choice as it blends traditional and contemporary styles in a harmonious way, creating a timeless look that is both classic and modern. This design style is characterized by clean lines, neutral colors, and a mix of textures, such as smooth and rough surfaces, light and dark hues, and soft and hard materials. I also love the blend of different materials, such as wood, soft texture, glass, and metal. This style is perfect for those who want a classic look with a modern twist, and who value comfort, function, and simplicity in their living spaces. I will say that Bear and Eliza’s room will probably not be in this style at all because I want them to be really fun, colorful, and creative spaces.

We are so excited for this new chapter which will hopefully begin in April (our expected move in month). Wish us luck!
